On Satya Yuga Maa Bhabani immolated herself and committed suicide in Daksha’s Yagna. Lord Shiva was omniscient, so the death of his beloved wife Sati disturbed him while he was in deep meditation in Kailash. Infuriated with anger, Shiva arrived at the Yagna spot. He destroyed the Yagna and took up the dead body of Sati in his shoulder. Lord Shiva headed towards west with the ashes of Maa Parvati.
Soon at Matalapur those ashes got separated from Lord Shiva. On the entry of Kaliyug, in 1934 Devi Maa again re-appeared on the month of “Jyastha Suklapakshya Panchami” (Tuesday). During her arrival the place became enlightened by her magical powers. Devi Maa entered into Kalashi’s body and introduced herself. She chose this holy place as her stay. As per Devi Maa’s wish, villagers went thousands miles from the shore of Chilika, in deep water & they found Devi Maa’s idol.
They placed the idol in the temple on an auspicious day & started to worship. Soon after that people started to notice miracles like fire flakes from water, Mahaprasad from air, vision for blind, recovery from deadly diseases, etc on every Tuesday and Saturday. Such miracles started to produce strong devotion for Devi Maa. Since 1954, Devi Maa has not shown herself in any form but all wishes of her devotees are still continue to get fulfilled by sheer faith and devotion.
